Making the extraordinary feel alive.

Randy Gaul makes imaginary worlds feel inhabited. His creatures seem to have histories. His landscapes suggest stories unfolding beyond the frame. Even his illuminated objects invite the feeling that something might be living inside. Across drawing, painting, sculpture, and design, he gives unfamiliar forms a presence that rewards a closer look.

A career in world-building

That ability to make the extraordinary believable has shaped a career encompassing artwork for more than 100 films. Born in Pittsburgh and trained in illustration at Pratt Institute, Gaul joined Industrial Light & Magic in 1998, following freelance storyboard and concept work for Disney, MTV, and Wild Brain. His experience spans concept design, visual development, character and creature design, matte painting, storyboarding, and art direction. These are the disciplines that help filmmakers discover what a world looks like, how its inhabitants move through it, and what an audience might feel when they first encounter it.

At IceBlink Studio, he contributed visual development, character and creature design, and paintings establishing mood and color for The Polar Express, Monster House, War of the Worlds, and Beowulf. His portfolio offers a glimpse into that process: environments for Monster House, alien walker studies for War of the Worlds, and sea creatures and Grendel concepts for Beowulf. These drawings and paintings belong to the exploratory work through which a film’s visual identity takes shape, with individual imagination contributing to a much larger collaboration.

His film work also encompasses A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Signs, Gangs of New York, Despicable Me, Rio, Alice in Wonderland, Trolls, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. His portfolio includes concept and visual development work for Men in Black II, The Croods, A Christmas Carol, and Where the Wild Things Are, as well as matte painting for Mr. Peabody & Sherman. His professional experience includes matte painting for Madagascar 3, art direction and concept work on Dreamcatcher, and storyboard and matte painting consultation for HBO’s Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Beyond Industrial Light & Magic and IceBlink, his work has connected him with DreamWorks Animation, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Digital Domain, Tippett Studio, and Legendary Pictures. He has also worked as creative director at Luminous Blue Animation, developing original stories and intellectual property. His practice extends into games, books, and virtual reality, carrying the same curiosity about characters and imagined environments into different ways of telling a story.

An imagination grounded in making

His imagination is grounded in the experience of making things by hand. Years spent teaching woodworking and partnering in a cabinet-making and furniture shop developed an understanding of materials, construction, and function. Through Halocline Studio, he brings that knowledge into artworks, furniture, and lighting made with salvaged materials. An object’s previous life becomes part of what it can become.

Sharing that experience is another part of his practice. Gaul mentors young artists on balancing the demands of studio work with the creative interests that brought them to art in the first place. In 2022, he co-juried Painting with Pixels with production designer Dylan Cole, O’Hanlon Center for the Arts’ first exhibition devoted entirely to digital art.

In his independent work, inspiration often begins close to home: a tree root encountered on a walk, an image from a dream, or a conversation that takes an unexpected turn. These beginnings grow into elaborate anatomies, watchful characters, strange forests, and constructed spaces. Humor sits alongside unease. Nature and technology intertwine. Familiar expressions emerge from bodies that resist easy explanation.

Inner Workings

Inner Workings at 111 Minna Gallery brings these strands of Gaul’s practice together. It offers an intimate encounter with the imagination behind a career in cinematic world-building, expressed through work he makes on his own terms. Here, viewers are invited to linger, follow the details, and consider the stories these worlds might hold.
